E-prescribing initiative benefits providers and patients
Douglas H. Stutz, NHB Public Affairs
Posted April 22, 2014 at 1:26 p.m.

The old yarn about trying to decipher a doctor’s scribbled shorthand note for a prescription is coming to an end with a new electronic prescription initiative implemented at Naval Hospital Bremerton.

NHB is the first military treatment facility in the Department of Defense (DoD) to use the electronic prescription initiative, or e-prescribing. This capability allows civilian prescribers to electronically forward their prescription request(s) on behalf of their patient to NHB’s Pharmacy to fill instead of utilizing a handwritten paper script.

After NHB Pharmacy leadership briefed over a dozen medical business managers back in January 2014 on the initiative, the command went live for e-prescribing on March 14, 2014. The first e-prescription (eRX) was received March 20 at 9:55 a.m. Currently over 50 local civilian prescribers are participating in sending their patient’s prescription electronically to the NHB pharmacy.

“This capability allows civilian providers to securely send their prescription and associated instructions electronically to Naval Hospital Bremerton for any of our NHB beneficiaries. We’re the first site to roll out the function but eventually all Department of Defense military treatment facilities will have access to this capability,” said Lt. Cmdr. Eric Parsons, NHB pharmacy department head.  Read All!

From the Commander

Greetings,

It is with a heavy heart that I send this message. Earlier this week I received an e-mail from the National Office that informed me of the passing of Edie A. Ferris, on Tuesday, April 22. Ed qualified in submarines on the USS Drum (SS-228) in 1947 and was a BMC when he left the Navy. He joined USSVI in 1996 and was a member of the Olympic Peninsula Base, Bremerton Base, and SVWWII. With Ed departing on Eternal Patrol, let it be known that we have lost another hero. Sailor, rest your oar!

Oly Base Cdr John Clear Sends:

"Red,

This year's combined ceremonies for the Holland Club Induction and Tolling of the Boats, at the Naval Undersea Museum auditorium, will be held on Thursday, May 22nd starting at 1000.

We will induct Capt. Bill Rothert USN Ret.(Olympic Peninsula), CDR Al Standish USN Ret.(Bremerton, in absentia - he will be in Europe) and some guy named John Mansfield (from all over). The Navy band will be present, color guard, chaplain, and our guest speaker is CDR Elkowitz C.O. of the USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23.

The Tolling will be in conjunction with a power point presentation (USSVI produced) screened while the boats are being tolled (65). The M.C. for the combined event is some unknown named John Clear EMC(SS) USN Ret. (a "still" good looking, but worn out old Chief).

Any questions? Give me a yell...

Best Regards,

John

He then introduced Kitsap Bluejackets Baseball Team owners Mr. & Mrs. Rick Smith.  Rick gave about a 30 minute review of the 9 year old semipro Bluejacket history, the league and many details of the organization and their desire for us to interact with the team.
