Bremerton Base Members Attend South Sound Base Meeting

(Posted 2-10-2014)

A few Bremerton Base members joined South Sound Base members for a Saturday (8 Feb,2014) afternoon meeting at the Eric G. Sandstrom VFW Post 969 in Tacoma.

Bremerton Base's SK Ralph Harris brought his goods to sell, and WWII Subvet Paul Christofferson gave a brief talk about his duty in WWII on USS Raton, the only boat known to have had  been fired on by another US Sub during WWII.

Lucky they were duds, because a least one of two fired hit the Raton.

Paul then joined the Army for combat duty in Korea and Viet Nam, then retirement.

We beat the snow home.

Stolen USS Puffer plaque? USS Naubuc? Puget Sound?

(Posted 2-08-2014)  Yakima Base Member sends

I've been contacted by a local Sheriff's Detective, who is trying to find some information.  They've seized some metal plaques from a suspected thief, and one of them is a USS Puffer SSN652 plaque.  Another says USS Puget Sound.  A third is from USS Naubuc YRST-4, a WWII net laying ship.

If anyone has an idea where these plaques came from, please let me know; I'll put you in touch with the Detective.  He thinks they might have been removed from a gravestone, but let's not limit our thinking to that.  Help us find the rightful owner!

I'm assuming these probably hasn't traveled too far, probably belong to someone in Washington State, but I invite you to forward this to anyone you know who isn't on my list.

Photos of the plaques are attached.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Robert "Robbie" Robertson USN (Ret)

(updated 2-9-2014)

Recent visitors report Robbie has improved significantly.  Give him a call.

One of my WWII Subvet heros is recovering from a pneumonia at Anderson House in North Seattle.

Mustang Commander Robert "Robbie" Robertson USN (Ret), 88, has been suffering from a pneumonia since early January, while in and out of the hospital and recovery house a couple times. Robbie also has a bad heart and suffered a heart attack in January. He is weak but would like to accept phone calls and visitors (best after 6PM).  I am sure he would like a get well card too.

As a young sailor, Robbie served in USS Tirante (SS-420) with Medal of Honor recipient  Lieutenant Commander George L. Street III on all Tirante war patrols. An electrician, Robbie converted to ET, served in Amberjack and Odax before going to Nuke School in 1953 and qualified as an officer in Seawolf (1955-1960). Robbie then went on in repair billets and was promoted to commander before retiring in 1974.

Robbie is an active member in several veterans organizations.
