FLASH-01: Dedication to Tim VeArd by NC T.Michael Bircumshaw
Submitted by: Alfred H Singleman Jr on 4/8/2013

He was my friend, my shipmate, and a dedicated contributor, whose actions and pure generosity will forever impact the administrative heart of USSVI. Tim VeArd was a young man whom I first met nearly fifty years ago aboard the USS Robert E Lee SSBN-601. To the best of my memory our first contact was when he walked up with a piping book and Qual Card in hand asking about getting signed off on the primary Reactor Plant, or some other Nuke system that I could sign for.

By the time I left the 601 he was a highly qualified and dedicated NAVET. At some point in time we became closer and I began to call him, “Little Brother”. I admit that we lost contact as I moved on in ‘67, but that is the military way. It is also the military way that sometimes you meet up again, and that happened sometime in 2005 when I picked up the job as Editor of the American Submariner and Tim became the Chief Technology Officer for USSVI.

Tim had gone from being a highly qualified Navigation Technician to the apex of his career in virtually all things involving data and systems that I struggled to understand and operate in accordance with the magazine and later on as NJVC and the national membership chairman. Without Tim’s systems and the incredible data base that he and Pat Householder strung together, my job of NJVC would have been severely restricted and limited in so many ways.
Tim was married to Lynda for 40 some years and they raised a family of two, Tim and Cherie, plus a sort of adopted son by marriage (it’s a long story), Tim II.

Although Tim and Lynda were on the East Coast and I was at the other end of the country, we did see each other at conventions and at 601 reunions where we rebuilt our friendship to some extent and reminded ourselves of past days.

Tim was the major contributor to the success of the USSVI data system, and he did it all “gratis”. We attempted to thank him in words and by bestowing USSVI’s highest honor, the “Joe Negri” award, upon him a few years back. He also earned a well-deserved “Robert Link” award. But it was never really enough, it was simply the best that we had, sort of like what Tim did for us, he gave us the best that he had.

And then there is the less than pleasant news, Tim is gone. He was taken by cancer many years before he should have left us and his beloved family. In his memory we have established a “Tim VeArd Scholarship Fund”.

There is some consolation in having Tim’s family volunteer to carry on in the maintenance and development of the USSVI data base for which we are forever grateful.

In looking for some way to honor Tim and his memory I have designated him as the USSVI “CTO Emeritus“. His name and that title will be forever inscribed in all American Submariner magazines to come. It is a very small way to remember and to thank a dedicated and devoted shipmate for his unfailing efforts to serve us all.

Condolences may be sent to Tim’s wife, Lynda VeArd, daughter Cherie and son Tim at 2240 Lakes Of Melbourne Dr., Melbourne, FL 32904-9171

Subject: Tim VeArd on Eternal Patrol
(Posted 4-8-2013)

United States Submarine Veterans member Tim VeArd departed on his Final Patrol on April 6, 2013 with no regrets or dreams unfulfilled.

Following his father’s footsteps, Tim joined the Navy in 1962 and became qualified in submarines aboard the USS Robert E Lee (SSBN-601) in 1967. He also briefly served aboard USS Bang (SS-385) in 1962. Tim was a ETN 2rd Class (SS) when he left the USS Robert E Lee and the Navy in 1970.

Following his Navy service Tim had a distinguished career, first working for Wang Computers, and then as a Computer Software Services business owner and consultant.

Tim never forgot his submariner roots and in 1999 joined the US Submarine Veterans, Snug Harbor Base located in Melbourne FL where he served in various capacities, including Base Commander.

Tim also remained in contact with his shipmates from his service aboard the USS Robert E Lee and became President of the Association.

He developed Decklog, a crew tracking database system for submariners and boat associations that has grown to include over 86,000 U.S. submariners and hundreds of donated websites, to submarine crew associations, USSVI chapters and to Naval Submarine League.

In 2006 Tim assumed the volunteer position of USSVI Chief Technical Officer and developed an integrated national database system for use by all 160+ chapters across the United States, and held that position until his passing in 2013.

Highly respected and well liked by all, in recognition of his support and contributions to all his submariner shipmates in many ways, Tim was awarded the Bob Link Natl Commander’s Commendation award in 2007 and the Joe Negri Shipmate of the Year award in 2008, the two highest recognition awards offered by USSVI.

Because of the important contributions made by Tim, the leadership of USSVI determined to honor his memory by providing a memorial scholarship to be given in his name.

Any financial support for this Scholarship should be sent to USSVI, Attn Tim VeArd Scholarship, PO Box 3870, Silverdale WA 98383.

Condolences may be sent to Tim's wife, Lynda VeArd, daughter Cherie and son Tim at 2240 Lakes Of Melbourne Dr, Melbourne, FL 32904-9171

FLASH-01: 2013 National Awards Nominees requested
Submitted by: Alfred H Singleman Jr on 3/31/2013
All Hands: High importance!
The absolute deadline for award nominations is April 30th. As of this date, there is barely a small handful of nominations submitted. The Awards Program is an important and integral part of USSVI, as it is the only means we have of honoring and thanking our shipmates who have dedicated themselves and contributed to the success of our great organization, USSVI.

There are several categories to choose from, and virtually every Base has a member or members that go “above and beyond” in one or more of these categories. It is our duty to acknowledge these Shipmates by nominating them for these various awards. It is our way of saying “Thanks, and Bravo Zulu” for your extra effort to make USSVI the premier veterans organization in the world.
Visit the Awards Manual at the below listed link, check out the various awards, look around at your shipmates and put those in for an award they qualify for.
Remember that the Award on Committee only has your letter of nomination to make the sel from, so the better it is written, the better chance your Nominee has of being selected. Also remember that not everyone nominated can get an award, but the mere fact that they were nominated makes them a “Winner”. It is an honor and a great feeling for a Nominee to know that their shipmates thought enough of them and their efforts to put them in for an award.

Please don’t put this on the “back burner” any longer. The deadline will come and go before you know it.

Thanks for your attention to this matter,

Bill Andrea
BCG Chair
 Past ESRD

The USSVI 2013 National Awards Program began accepting nominations on February 1, 2013.

The Awards Manual with descriptions of each award and the criteria for each is posted on the USSVI site under the Awards tab and also is linked here for your convenience.

Take a look at the Manual, and start thinking about your Shipmates which should be nominated for the various Awards.

Any questions about the Manual or the Program, please contact me at the address or phone numbers listed.

Message from the Base Vice Commander

 (Posted 3-30-2013)

Hello all, I stopped by the VFW off National yesterday. I spoke with the commander and we will be on the agenda for the Memorial Day ceremony at Ivy Green. No date yet, but I will inquire. Actually all we need to do is show up early, speak with the individual in charge of reading the groups as they present their respective wreath. I will check on the progress of our wreath soon. I did get a letter last week from her and she has started it. Please contact me with any questions. Thanks.

To all Western District 4 Base Officers: (WRD4, please forward)

To all bases that failed to come to collect the "traveling dolphins" at our last base meeting. Please see if you can

show your leadership by making the effort in attending our April meeting (Tues, April 16th, 1900) with at least one elected officer and 2 other members to take the dolphins home with you.  Of course the farther away you come from, the longer you may keep them as Bremerton Base will make every effort to get them back ASAP.  Also you must share a sea story as required. Aar, Aar, Aar!

Still need Speakers at future Meetings. You or and associate may speak on any subject you desire for 20 minutes

Call me or e-mail me

Click please to find details for qualifications and responsibilities, and how to nominate either yourself or a Shipmate. (Bylaws, Art VII, Section 6) I have been filling the roles of both District 4 Commander and Region Director since last September, and it would be so nice to have someone step up as District 4 Commander.

We have great bases in the district and traveling around to their meetings and events is very rewarding, and you run into some of the neatest people.

I extend my thanks and gratitude to those who have supported my activities these past four years as DC, and know that you guys will turn and burn on putting up our next DC.
