"Tales from the Deep"

(Posted Nov 18, 2012)

On Saturday, Nov 17th, at the invitation of Kitsap Library's Bremerton Downtown Manager, Sussan Lavin, three base members gave some incite on submarine duty to a small group of listeners.

Secretary Wayne Siekowski reviewed his career on bommers and SSNs; and provided the group with a typical daily routine of boomer sailors at sea.

Base Cdr Jim DeMott, a veteran also of boomers and SSNs, focused his comments on duty aboard USS Pittsburg SSN-720, in the Persian Gulf and also on drug interdiction in the Eastern Pacific, off California, staying submerged for 3 months and working with the Coast Guard.

Webmaster Don Bassler briefed his life from birth to today, then focused on a near collision with a freighter at night  in the North Pacific in 1967 on USS Remora SS-487.  Remora was transiting on the surface in a darken ship condition.

(Although many aspects of submarining are similar, these guys provided information, i.e. "tales" that were unique and made it very interesting to me.  GCed.)

In the past, the Bremerton Base has taken up a collection to provide a holiday gift for a worthy cause.  This year, the Base continues the tradition and once again has selected the Retsil Veteran’s Home.  Money raised will go for buying phone cards and other gifts for the veterans residing at the home.

On December 8, 2012, at this year’s Base Christmas party, we will “pass the hat” to collect for the donation.  The Base has agreed to match up to $200.00. The gifts will be presented after the party, on a date not yet determined (but before Christmas).

If you don’t plan on attending the party, you can still contribute.  Donations can be made, payable to “USSVI Bremerton Base”.  Please note that the contribution is for the Christmas Party collection.  Contributions can be given to me, Base Treasurer Dennis Nardone, or mailed to USSVI Bremerton Base, P.O. Box 465, Silverdale, Wa, 98383-0465.

Thank you for your support in this venture.

Jim DeMott

Subvet John Gardner Tolls the Bell at Veterans Day Ceremony

(Posted Nov 13, 2012)

—Retired Marine Col. Charlie Tyrian encapsulated the United We Stand Veterans Day event Monday in three words: sacrifice, service and celebration.

Tyrian, now a motivational speaker and leadership, sales and customer service trainer, described three dramatic sacrifices.

Roy Matsumoto, sent to an Arkansas internment camp during World War II, joined the Army, served as an interpreter in Burma, saved fellow soldiers and became one of the most decorated Japanese-American veterans of the war. He lives in the San Juans, his daughter on Bainbridge Island.  Read more\

Auburn Veterans Day Parade was Great!Click for Big Picture

(Posted Nov 11, 2012)  (BIG PICTURE)

Members of Bremerton, Seattle and South Sound Base attended, including a least 2 WWII vets and 5 active duty sailors were in our midst.

Our parade floats and old cars were tuned up to peak, as was the weather for the event.

Too bad the media had to focus on the Vets for Peace as they were very, very small part of the parade.  What jerks! (The Media) Disrespect for the veterans that have made their life great through vets sacrifices.)  See what I mean here! But see how it was really was here.
