DEPLOYMENT ALERT

Two Former Willie Spoon Scholars to Afghanistan

(Posted Oct 23, 2012)

I am writing to alert you that my daughters CPT Heather McColl Morgan and 1LT Amber McColl are both deployed / deploying to Afghanistan for nine months. Heather is the Battalion Intelligence Officer for a Stryker armored / mechanized infantry battalion. Amber is part of the brigade headquarters to which Heather's unit belongs.

Please share with the Base and ask them to support as they see fit with good thoughts and prayers for their safety, wisdom and determination to do their jobs well. I've attached a photo. Amber on the left / Heather on the right.

Both were previous awardees of Willie Spoon Memorial Scholarships, and I wanted the Base to know that their confidence in Heather and Amber in awarding them the scholarships is being returned to the nation in a big way.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Angus

Awards Presented at October 16th Meeting

(Posted Oct 21, 2012)

(Images provided by USSVI WRD John Mansfield, taken by Dennis Nardone)

Cdr Jim DeMott led the Oct 16th meeting off with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Creed, the Tolling of the Boats for October and the Chaplain's invocation.

Jim then introduced the evening speaker, active duty submariner and USSVI life member John Perkins, a devote patriot serving on a fast attack at Bangor.

John, a proud quartermaster, set his eyes on a Navy career at age 5 when he visited a submarine at Ballast Point in San Diego.  A Bremerton native, John joined the Navy after high school and qualified on Ben Franklin in 1992 and served on SSBN's and SSNs through 16years of service.

At 42, John, with a family, wife Ruth, and  5 children, broke service a few years ago for 4 years.  He roared back, serving in a fast attack that launched Tomahawks in the gulf war(s).

John's talk reviewed his life since birth, which included humorist statements such as when he was mess cooking and "Cranking for Freedom".

John, thanks for your talk, it was not only interesting but  also entertaining.

After a break, Jim introduced our new Western Region Director, John Mansfield, who presented the base the 2012 large base (125+ members) Golden Anchor award for many accomplishments we achieved during the past year. Most ongoing but a couple new. He enumerated them in his written recommendation to the National Awards committee.

John then presented, then Puget Soundings Editor Sam Swenson, with the 2012 large base best Newsletter

Award.  Sam can be very proud in his service to the base in this capacity for 6 years.

We can thank John, in his last year as WRD 4 commander, he took the time and effort to write the recommendations that were awarded to us.

The business meeting, 50/50 drawing and Chaplain's benediction closed the meeting.

Have two stamps ready for your ballot

October 11th, 2012 by Steven Gardner, Kitsap Sun

Walt Washington, county auditor, issued a statement saying ballots will begin arriving Oct. 19 and that this year’s ballot will require two first-class stamps should you choose to mail it back. Or you can weigh it to get the exact postage. The bottom line is one stamp won’t be enough.
