Reprising USSVI 2012 Candidates
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/3//2012

Shipmates,

We are fortunate to have many good shipmates ready and willing to serve us as National and Region officers in our organization.

We all immensely enjoy the camaraderie that comes with associating with our bubblehead brothers, and that is important, but our primary organizational mission is to see that the men who served and died aboard United States Submarines are never forgotten both now and in future times. Your elected officers are your stewards for that legacy and are responsible to see that our organization is passed on to the next generation of American Submariners in good order and financially solvent.

Having good men of vision and purpose step up to these positions is critical if USSVI is to continue it's purpose for future submariners.

Following this message are a review of the positions and the candidates for those positions. Each are listed in alphabetic order and incumbents are noted as such.

Regardless of who you vote for, they all deserve our thanks for making themselves available to serve us all.

Please give each of these good men your serious consideration before you cast your vote

FLASH-01: USSVI National Election Start info
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/2/2012

Shipmates, there has been various information shared by well meaning but misinformed shipmates regarding the start date of the pending USSVI National Election.

The online ballot will appear at www.ussvi.org at the top of the buttons at the left side of that page when it becomes active.

It will become active when the National Commander is satisfied that the majority of the American Submariner Magazine issues have been received by the membership.

This is because in order for you to make an informed voting choice, you will need the magazine in your hands and open to the voting information.

Those who wish to vote by paper ballot may do so as soon as they receive their magazines and have evaluated the Candidates and Proposed Amendments.

Note the mailing instructions at the bottom of the ballot.

Regardless of voting method, please read and reflect on the proposed amendments and on the qualifications of the good men who have stepped up to run for the various postions that guide USSVI.

Your vote is your voice in the future operation of our organization of American Submariners.

May Base Meeting Notes

(Updated 5-25-2012)

Tuesday evening, May 15th provided us a view and value of your own storekeeper aboard the boats.  As was pointed out there were  few in the boats before 1965.

Recognized was Don Loughridge, 89, WWII Subvet.Base Secretary Wayne Siekowski

After routine opening ceremonies, Base Secretary Wayne  Sieckowski gave an interesting speech which included his experience in the Navy before submarine service, which appeared to help his boat CO's get their jobs done using his knowledge and personal contacts.  (Similar to those in civilian life that succeed.) His talk contained some humorous stories, all true.

Wayne's introduced his "Sea Daddy", Jim Doucett, a senior submariner for sure, from Florida

Past PS Editor

Thanks Wayne!

Also we owe a debt of gratitude to Sam Swenson for his long and tireless work (6 years) as the editor of the Puget Soundings.. I know this was a challenge for him not only never serving aboard a boat, but learning computer programs that were mostly new to him.  Sam, thank You!

PS Editor Dave PittmanOur new editor, Dave Pittman has taken over.  A generation younger than Sam (or I, for that matter), Dave will likely provide articles of more interest to that generation, but still recognizing the deeds of his predecessors.

He will need content (images, announcements etc with descriptions), E-mail Dave.

WWII Subvet Don Loughridge accepted Holland Club certificate from Base Cdr Jim DeMott and HC Chairman Dick Litscher.

2012 Fireworks  (See Watch Bill)

(updated 6-7-2012)

WE NEED YOUR HELP - SEVERAL SLOTS STILL OPEN

In preparation for the subject event, please consider signing up for a watch at the Fire Works Stand. Early bird gets the worm!  E-mail or call Sam . See Watch Bill.

The fire works stand will be located at its traditional spot in front of the QFC on Kitsap Way in Bremerton.

Base Fireworks Sales Manager Mike Sullivan suggests that we join the TNT club to help the base make the most out of our hard work, selling fireworks. No matter whether you work the sale or buy fireworks, or not participate, you can still help. Join the TNT Club on-line. Besides their literature you will be sent a $10 discount certificate by snail mail and also one by e-mail for purchases totaling over $50. If you do not use them, turn both of them over to Mike and he will ensure that those credits are made to people that are buying at the fireworks stand, and it will not effect our bottom line, but will be used to encourage buyers to purchase over the $50 mark. Go to TNT Fireworks and sign up. The fireworks sale is our primary money maker that supports base functions and our charitable donations, like scholarships. Help Please!

Bells toll for lost World War II subs, submariners

(Published 5-26-2012)

KEYPORT —Three World War II submariners joined active-duty and retired sailors Thursday in remembering peers killed during World War II.

Robert Paul, a retired Navy electronics technician, struck a brass bell 55 times during a Tolling the Boats ceremony, once for each of the 52 submarines lost during the war, two for ill-fated Cold War subs USS Thresher and USS Scorpion, and a final time for any Navy submariners who died serving their country.
